I am proud to be supporting the ’Buy Local’ initiative and the recent launch of ‘Darlington’s Foundation for Jobs’. These initiatives which bring together businesses, the public sector, the council and schools are a local response to supporting Darlington’s economy.  With our national economy struggling and unemployment rising it is vital we look locally to promote business growth and support local jobs.

The ‘Buy Local’ initiative, by the Darlington Business Club, is a great way to premier Darlington businesses, we need local residents to buy local produce and use local services to support our local economy. To ‘buy local’ means supporting local jobs and help create new ones.  Darlington has been hit hard by the recession with 3300 people currently unemployed with 8.6 people per job vacancy, a large proportion of which are young people.

In Darlington, we have seen long-term youth unemployment rise by 145%, it is important that we act to ensure that Darlington’s next generation are not a jobless generation. In January, I was proud to support the launch of Darlington’s Foundation for Jobs which has seen both the public and private sector work together to create 100 internships and 100 apprenticeships to give unemployed young people an opportunity to get their first step on the ladder.  Just as local residents need to support local businesses, local businesses need to consider whether they can create and offer new job opportunities, particularly to young people.  Through working together we can secure Darlington’s economic future and ensure a more prosperous town.
